How Much Does a Website Cost in 2026?

What a small business website really costs to build and run, by type and by who builds it, with sources.

Short answer: a 5–10 page small business website usually costs $1,500 to $5,000 from a freelancer and $5,000 to $15,000 from an agency in 2026. Doing it yourself on a website builder costs a few hundred dollars a year, plus your time. Online stores and custom web apps cost several times more.

This guide shows what each option costs to build and to keep running, what drives the price up, and what to ask before you sign. The prices were checked in October 2026, and every outside figure links to where it came from.

What it costs to keep a website running

  • Domain name: about $10–$20 a year.
  • Hosting: about $10–$30 a month for a typical small business WordPress site.
  • Premium theme and plugins: $0–$300 a year, depending on what the site needs.
  • Website builders bundle hosting into a plan: Wix runs $17–$159 a month and Squarespace $19–$99 a month on annual billing.

Freelancers: hourly rates

Upwork lists a median of $15–$30 an hour for web designers, rising to $45–$75 or more for fully custom design work (Upwork web designer cost page). A quote by the hour is hard to budget, so ask for a fixed price for a fixed list of pages and features.

What pushes the price up

  • Number of pages and templates. Ten pages built from two templates cost far less than ten unique designs.
  • Selling online. Products, payments, shipping and tax rules add a lot of setup.
  • Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, member logins and client portals each add development time.
  • Content. Copywriting, photography and video are often priced separately.
  • Speed and SEO work. Good builds include fast loading, mobile testing and on-page SEO. Cheap ones often skip them.

Eight questions to ask before you sign

  1. Will I own the domain, the hosting account and the website files?
  2. Exactly which pages and features are included in the price?
  3. How many rounds of revisions are included?
  4. Is the site built on WordPress, a website builder, or custom code, and can someone else maintain it later?
  5. Will it be tested on phones, tablets and all major browsers?
  6. Is basic on-page SEO included (titles, descriptions, sitemap, page speed)?
  7. What are the yearly costs after launch, and who pays them?
  8. Who fixes things if something breaks after launch, and how quickly?
